Monday, December 8: Elections Alberta approves a petition launched by musician Corb Lund that seeks to have the legislature vote on a proposed ban on new coal mining activities, including new approvals and permits, “within the Eastern Slopes of the Rocky Mountains.”

Tuesday, December 9: Peter Guthrie is named the new leader of the Alberta Party, a party he describes as having a “Progressive Conservative vision.” The Alberta Party sought to change its name to the Alberta Progressive Conservatives, but the UCP government introduced legislation to prevent the use of certain words, including “conservative,” in new party names.

Wednesday, December 10: Elections Alberta approves three more recall petitions, including those for premier Danielle Smith (MLA, Brooks-Medicine Hat) and MLAs Rebecca Schulz (Calgary-Shaw) and Nate Glubish (Strathcona-Sherwood Park). The required number of signatures for Smith’s petition is 12,070, to be submitted to Elections Alberta by March 10, 2026.

Friday, December 12: The Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) files a complaint with the Alberta Labour Relations Board that accuses the provincial government of bad-faith bargaining. The grievance says the government was misleading during contract negotiations last fall and attempted to “drive a wedge between teachers and the ATA.”
