Recall campaign for Calgary-Bow MLA Demetrios Nicolaides comes to an end.

Tuesday, January 20: Minister of Hospital and Surgical Health Services Matt Jones announces that the $151-million Peter Lougheed Centre expansion has been completed and that the emergency department will open in late February. The expansion has created space for an additional 97 patient beds, including 28 new emergency beds.

Wednesday, January 21: The campaign to recall Calgary-Bow MLA Demetrios Nicolaides comes to an end. Organizer Jenny Yeremiy says the campaign collected around 6,500 of the 16,006 signatures required to force a constituency-wide vote on whether Nicolaides should lose his legislative seat.

Thursday, January 22: News circulates that the union representing firefighters in Lethbridge has withdrawn its membership in the Alberta Federation of Labour and called on AFL president Gil McGowan to resign. The president of Lethbridge Fire Fighters IAFF Local 237, Brent Nunweiler, said the October 2025 teachers strike highlighted “significant inaction, a lack of co-ordination and an overall sense of disorganization” within the AFL.
