Supervised consumption sites in Calgary and Lethbridge will close at the end of June

Monday, March 16: A report says that $250-million in unpaid oil and gas property taxes in Alberta is unlikely to ever be recovered. The report, by the Rural Municipalities of Alberta and the provincial government, outlines 17 recommendations to reduce future delinquency from oil and gas companies.

Tuesday, March 17: In response to a question by Alberta NDP leader Naheed Nenshi, premier Danielle Smith discloses that she took a flight last fall in a private plane paid for by the Saudi government. Smith says the flight was approved by the provincial ethics commissioner. Nenshi has asked for the correspondence with the commissioner to be tabled in the legislature.

Wednesday, March 18: The UCP government announces the Safeguards for Last Resort Termination of Life Act. Among other changes, the legislation would prohibit Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) for people under 18, for people whose sole condition is a mental illness, and in cases where a natural death is not “reasonably foreseeable.” The bill would also allow physicians and healthcare facilities to refuse to assess or provide MAID.

Friday, March 20: The Alberta government announces it will close the supervised consumption sites (SCS) in Calgary and Lethbridge at the end of June. The Sheldon Chumir’s SCS (Calgary) will be replaced with rapid access addiction medicine services. Two SCS sites in Edmonton and one in Grande Prairie will continue to operate.
