Monday, July 27: Elk Island National Park announces temporary closures due to flooding from a severe storm over the weekend. Edmonton and surrounding areas have been hit with more than a year’s worth of rain in two months.

Tuesday, July 28: Lawyers for former Alberta Health Services CEO Athana Mentzelopoulos and lawyers for AHS and the provincial government meet in court. Mentzelopoulos’s wrongful dismissal lawsuit contains allegations that she was fired for investigating questionable contracts and AHS procurement processes. AHS says it fired Mentzelopoulos because she wasn’t fulfilling her duties. Both parties deny the allegations.

Wednesday, July 29: Corb Lund files an application for judicial review in the Court of King’s Bench after Elections Alberta rejected his Water Not Coal petition. Lund is arguing that Elections Alberta’s decision was unreasonable and procedurally unfair.

Thursday, July 30: WestJet flight attendants issue a 72-hour strike notice. WestJet responds with a 72-hour lockout notice and begins to park its 737 aircraft. Nearly 4,300 flight attendants could be off the job as soon as this Sunday.

Friday, July 31: CBC breaks news that the expansion of a thermal coal mine near Hinton has been approved by the Alberta Energy Regulator without a regulatory hearing. The expansion would make the Vista site the largest coal mine in North America.
