UCP government launches a $4-million ad campaign on the upcoming October referendum.

Tuesday, September 8: News circulates that Alberta separatist leader and lawyer Jeffrey Rath is facing a $109-million debt claim from US investors relating to his allegedly defaulting on a financing agreement related to First Nations and COVID-19 litigation.

September 8: Landowners represented by Ecojustice submit an application in the Court of King’s Bench to challenge what they call the Alberta Energy Regulator’s “chronic underfunding” of orphan well cleanups. The year’s Orphan Well Levy is set at $154.56-million, with total cleanup costs in the province estimated at $1.66-billion.

Wednesday, September 9: The Saddle Lake Cree Nation asserts its “treaty rights and jurisdiction to provide safe refuge for those seeing and proving gender-affirming care.” The statement is a response to a UCP government law aimed at trans and non-binary youth that includes prohibiting gender-reassignment surgery and the taking of puberty blockers.

Thursday, September 10: The UCP government launches a $4-million TV, radio, billboard and online ad campaign urging Albertans to vote to stay in Canada in the upcoming October referendum.

September 10: Transportation minister Devin Dreeshen announces that the UCP government’s trial of a 120 km/h speed limit along a 44-km stretch of the QE2 south of Leduc was a “great success” and that he’s looking to expand the trial to “all rural divided highways.”
