The legislature votes in favour of redrawing the province’s electoral map by a UCP-dominated committee.

Monday, April 20: The UCP government announces Alberta will adopt daylight time year-round, eliminating seasonal clock changes. In a 2021 provincial referendum Albertans voted to reject daylight time.

Tuesday, April 21: The legislature votes in favour of redrawing the province’s electoral map so that Alberta will have 91 ridings instead of the current 87. The vote comes after premier Danielle Smith rejected the new electoral boundaries recommended by an independent commission and announced she will give the final say on Alberta’s new electoral map to a UCP-dominated committee this fall.

Thursday, April 23: The province launches albertareferendum2026.ca, providing information on the fall referendum questions. Premier Danielle Smith says she will “openly advocate” for Albertans to vote yes to each of the nine questions. Opposition leader Naheed Nenshi says the site “tell[s] one side of the story, complete with completely made-up facts that have no bearing in reality.”

Friday, April 24: The UCP government announces it is introducing four expedited teaching certificates aimed at students in their final year of a bachelor of education, internationally trained teachers, and tradespeople and other skilled professionals. Minister of education and childcare Demetrios Nicolaides says the move will “fast-track qualified professionals into high-need classrooms.”
