Early Alberta Next survey results withheld

Monday, August 4: Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women Tanya Fir releases a statement on Heritage Day, saying that the holiday “honours the rich tapestry of cultures, traditions and histories that shape Alberta.”

Tuesday, August 5: The province reports 64 wildfires are burning across Alberta, with over 40 having been started over the long weekend and 16 classified as “out of control.” This year has seen 646 wildfires burning more than 672,000 hectares.

Wednesday, August 6: The UCP government holds a briefing to discuss its new Care-First Auto Insurance model, with no mention of its previous promise to reduce annual premiums by $400. Alberta has the second-costliest premiums in the country behind Ontario.

Thursday, August 7: The UCP government tells Postmedia it’s declining to release the early results of its Alberta Next surveys (questions to citizens about equalization, the desirability of an Alberta Pension Plan etc). The results are being withheld due to a clause under the Access to Information Act relating to “records deemed to be advice to officials.”

August 7: A referendum question proposing that Alberta separate from Canada is being reviewed at a hearing at the Court of King’s Bench in Edmonton to determine if it violates the Constitution, including treaty rights. A ruling is expected August 14.

Friday, August 8: The UCP government appeals the temporary injunction of a law it passed in December 2024 that bans Alberta’s doctors from providing gender-affirming care for youth. The government claims the injunction, granted in June, was premature, since it came before the law has gone into effect.
