ALBERTA COUNCIL FOR THE UKRAINIAN ARTS

The Council’s gallery and boutique celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2025. Oksana Movchan: Dedication to Ukraine, an ACUA Signature Artist Series event, runs Mar 19–Apr 18. The gallery also hosts a variety of workshops, including beginner guides to pysanka and pattern making using printing stamps.

The largest public gallery in Alberta dedicated to exhibiting craft arts such as pottery, glass, jewellery and fibre art. Fix, Fire, Forge, featuring the work of Alberta post-secondary art technicians including Brett Hollingsworth, Jane Trash and Kyle Whitehead, runs until May 30.

The AGA celebrated its 100th year in 2024–2025. It is currently showing Amy Loewan: Sanctuary, an exhibition of paper-weaving and drip paintings centred on a large-scale lantern, until May 31. A concurrent show is Wayfinders: A Constellation of Women Artists, featuring eight mid-career women artists, including Elizabeth Belliveau, Emily Jan and Oksana Movchan. 5 Artists 1 Love: 20 Years of Fierce Art & Soul, celebrating Edmonton’s African-Canadian communities, runs until Apr 19, while John Will: Born in the U.F.O., a retrospective exhibition, is on until Aug 9.

Your Alberta Legislature: The Story of a Place, a new exhibit in this gallery in the Legislative Assembly visitor centre, examines the history of the people, government and province of Alberta. It documents everything from the transformation of Glacial Lake Edmonton over 12,000 years to Alberta’s first day as a province, September 1, 1905.

The U of A’s Fine Arts Building Gallery presents exhibitions of student, staff and faculty work, as well as contemporary and historical artists. X-Painting, by Jesse Thomas, and Sheryl Spencer’s MFA Printmaking show both run until Mar 21. This year’s graduation show for Design runs Mar 31–Apr 11; the one for Fine Arts will be Apr 21–May 2.
