Municipal election day in Alberta

Monday, October 20: Today is municipal election day in Alberta, with polls open across the province from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Following a change made by the provincial government last year, all ballots will now be counted by hand.

Tuesday, October 21: Results for mayor, city council and school trustee elections are reported across the province. Jeromy Farkas wins Calgary’s mayoral race by less than 600 votes (0.17 per cent of the ballots) over Sonya Sharp, who will apply for a recount. In Edmonton Andrew Knack was elected mayor over runner-up Tim Cartmell; Knack got roughly 38 per cent of the vote to Cartmell’s 30 per cent.

Wednesday, October 22: In Edmonton, Ward sipiwiyiniwak results flip after a recount was ordered. Darrell Friesen was initially reported to have won over Thu Parmar by six votes. Following the recount, Parmar came out on top by over 600 votes.

Thursday, October 23: The Alberta government announces it will introduce back-to-work legislation (Bill 2) next week to end the teachers strike that has been ongoing since October 6.

Friday, October 24: The province announces it will end its hybrid work model for government employees as of February 1, 2026. Currently 12,600 employees are eligible to work from home two days per week, a policy introduced in March 2022 in response to COVID-19.
