Monday, October 5: Court of King’s Bench Justice Michael Lema orders Alberta Health Services and the province to disclose records they had sought to keep private in Athana Mentzelopoulos’s $1.7-million wrongful dismissal case. Mentzelopoulos alleges she was fired as AHS president and CEO in January 2025 to stop her inquiries into conflicts of interest and questionable contracts. AHS says she was fired for not fulfilling her duties.

Wednesday, October 7: National Defence Minister David McGuinty announces $8-billion in military spending in Alberta that will include the purchase of F-35 fighter jets for Canadian Forces Base Cold Lake and setting up a western operating base for the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Thursday, October 8: The Alberta government says it will require the City of Edmonton to “adopt rules for high-density infill development that revert to the parameters in place before [the City’s] 2024 zoning changes.” Critics, including Edmonton mayor Andrew Knack and Calgary mayor Jeromy Farkas, call this an unacceptable intrusion of the provincial government into municipal jurisdiction.

Friday, October 9: Today marks the last day for special mail-in ballots for the province-wide referendum to be postmarked in order to be received by Elections Alberta in time to be counted.

October 9: Court of King’s Bench Justice John Gill throws out an NDP challenge on voter list rules made by the Alberta government in September. Following the rule change, Elections Alberta can now provide only the number of registered voters in each area and municipality, and can no longer share full names, addresses or phone numbers.
