Monday, October 6: The 51,000 members of the Alberta Teachers’ Association begin their strike. More than 20,000 Albertans in Calgary and Edmonton attended rallies over the weekend in support of the teachers.

Tuesday, October 7: A new citizen initiative application is approved. It asks: “Should the Government of Alberta end its current practice of allocating public funds to accredited independent (private) schools?” Elections Alberta expects to issue petition signature sheets in one week.

Thursday, October 10: The provincial government’s bargaining team and the Alberta Teachers’ Association announce they will resume contract negotiations on Tuesday, October 14.
