Rooms With a Royal View

A photo essay

By Guillaume Nolet

These photos from Alberta are part of a quirky series taken across the country that explores a segment of the Canadian identity. Portraits of Her Majesty are displayed in so many different locations, reminding viewers that Elizabeth II and the British monarchy have been and continue to be deeply integrated in our institutions and cultural fabric. But with Her Majesty’s reign ending last year, will the monarchy—and how it is represented—be reshaped within Canadian culture? If so, what will happen to the hundreds if not thousands of royal portraits hanging on the walls of our schools, museums, legions, churches, city halls, arenas, hotels and jails? Will they become obsolete—or, on the contrary, once again à la mode?
