Alberta’s budget 2026 projects a $9.4-billion deficit

Wednesday, February 25: The Alberta government introduces Bill 16, the Travellers Protection and Destination Development Act, and proposes amendments to the Consumer Protection Act to increase transparency around hidden and misleading tourism fees at hotels, motels and inns.

Thursday, February 26: Finance minister Nate Horner releases Alberta’s $83.9-billion budget for 2026–2027, which projects a $9.4-billion deficit this year and no foreseeable return to balanced budgets. The budget breaks rules passed in Alberta in 2023 that require mostly balanced budgets and impose limits on deficits.

Friday, February 27: Elections Alberta announces that two recall petitions have been withdrawn (Jackie Lovely, Searle Turton) and seven have ended without a sufficient number of signatures being collected (Myles McDougall, Ric McIver, Muhammad Yaseen, Rajan Sawhney, Nolan Dyck, RJ Sigurdson and Dale Nally).
