Two data centre proposals

Monday, April 6: News circulates over the weekend that Kevin O’Leary’s proposed “Wonder Valley” data centre near Grande Prairie will be exempt from a provincial environmental impact assessment. Will Noel, analyst with the Pembina Institute, has suggested that if the project runs on natural gas, as proposed, and doesn’t capture its emissions, it will set Canada back 20 years in emissions reductions.

Tuesday, April 7: The Globe and Mail reports that Alberta Justice Minister Mickey Amery shortened the amount of time that Elections Alberta has to penalize political finance violations at the same time that his friend and relative Sam Mraiche is under investigation by Elections Alberta, “raising… questions about Mr. Amery’s potential conflicts of interest.”

Thursday, April 9: The Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation and Blackfoot Confederacy complete their arguments in court in an effort to block a referendum on Alberta separation.

Friday, April 10: A new Leger poll shows the UCP at 53% of decided voters in Alberta, with the NDP at 36%. Premier Danielle Smith’s approval sits at 46%, while Naheed Nenshi’s is at 35%.

April 10: Less than a month after a proposal for a data centre in Olds was rejected, Synapse, the company behind the proposal, reapplied with plans for a 1.4-gigawatt gas plant and data centre complex.
