Monday, March 30: Alberta NDP leader Naheed Nenshi answers a reporter’s question regarding a potential party name change: “If members of the party want to have that conversation… I’d be happy to have that conversation.” The question followed Nenshi’s statement that the selection of Avi Lewis as leader of the federal NDP is “not in the interests of Alberta.”

Tuesday, March 31: Mitch Sylvestre of Stay Free Alberta says the group has obtained more than the 177,732 signatures it needs to trigger a province-wide referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada. The group has until May 2, 2026 to collect signatures.

March 31: The UCP government introduces Bill 25, “an act to remove politics and ideology from classrooms,” which among other changes bans schools from displaying any flag but Canada’s or Alberta’s and gives the education minister power to veto new names for public schools. Alberta Teachers’ Association president Jason Schilling says the bill “contributes little to address the concerns teachers and school leaders are facing today.”

Thursday, April 2: The UCP government introduces Bill 28, which amends the Libraries Act to make books containing visual depictions of sex inaccessible in public libraries to children under the age of 15 by putting them in separate areas or controlled by library staff.
